Throughout
history, human beings have constructed monuments & great works
of art in religious celebration. Those who participate in these
efforts created great merit, which is the cause of feature peace
& happiness. For those who came afterward, such creation have
been source of continued inspiration.
The last century saw greater violence & destruction than any
other. Buddhist countries were not unaffected. Many, afflicted
by the source of communism, saw the wholesales destruction of
temples & monasteries & suppression of the spiritual community.
Others, subjected to dictatorship, military invasion and
terrorism, have had their freedom curtailed & their peaceful way
of life disrupted.
The plans of the Nepal Council for Preservation of Buddhist
Religion (NCPBR) and Mandala 21st Century, Japan. to
create the world's largest Thanka as this period of turmoil
subsides & we enter a new era of peace and optimism, is
therefore timely. Illustrating the four major events of the
Buddha's life in this way will become a great source of
inspiration, Developing respect and admiration for the Buddha's
& their qualities. as people who view the Thangka will be |

encouraged to
do, is among the causes for developing such qualities within
ourselves.
Although contributors to the project come from many
countries, if is appropriate that the Thanka should first
We displayed in Lumbini. the Buddha's birthplace before
being exhibited elsewhere. I pray that the project may be
successfully fulfilled & that it may become an inspiration
for peace & happiness throughout the world, now & in the
future. |
